I recently asked my mother what she knew about her mother.
Was she a good cook ? Well as it turns out grandma only knew
how to make kokis ( a mixed wheat based disc of bread cooked over a flat stove).

She didn't have time to cook complete meals for her five kids due to poor health and lack of interest.

So she fed the kids kokis. The kids got pretty fed up with eating the same food all the time. They complained. Sometimes they sneaked away and ate out.

In my 21st century world I tried and tasted hamburgers, pizzas, stakes, crepes, chinese dishes, thai dishes, sea foods, japanese dishes, french cuisine, and more. If I just count the various cuisines I sampled the number would go into double digits. Wow. The degree of change and movement of people in the world is tremendous. People I know from India are contemplating new businesses in China, and in Malaysia.

I wonder what grandma would say if she could witness the change in our times ? Would she open a franchise
restaurant and offer kokis to the world outside ? Or would she ignore her talents and let this opportunity pass her by ? Or would she chide her children and ask them not to try new things and return to the old foods ? Or would she simply dine out and enjoy herself.

Don't know.

Cheers

Long after my Granny died I decided to fix one of her specialties; corn pon. I worked in a Beauty Shop so I just knew that I could get the recipe from one of my clients, as it was very popular in the “old days.” I asked dozens of older women over the next few months to no avail. I tried the internet unsuccessfully.
You know how when you want something that you can’t seem to find anywhere you can sometimes become obsessed with the idea? I knew that this recipe was out there – it was common during the depression years. I would scan the index of old recipe books in antique stores; I just couldn’t give it up.

As I was cleaning out my garage, I knew that I had to take those boxes of junk mail from my granny’s house to the dump. I decided to take one last quick look through them, although I had long ago decided that they were worthless. The first one that I opened, what to my amazement was laying right on top of the pile of junk papers? An index card in perfect condition, in my granny’s distinctive hand writing; her CORN PON recipe.
